The Taiwan Corporate Governance Association held the 13th Annual Forum on Chinese Family Businesses today, focusing on the theme "Challenges Faced by Family Businesses in the Era of Co-Governance during Transformation 3.0." Founder Tsai Hung-ching highlighted that from 2012 to 2024, the market value of Taiwanese family businesses on the stock market plummeted from 64% to 27%, indicating a significant test of resilience for large traditional family enterprises amid changing competitive environments.
Tsai noted that Taiwanese family businesses have entered a "co-governance era," characterized by an increase in family members and diluted ownership. The third generation must balance ownership and governance while fostering a good co-governance relationship with management teams and market shareholders, which is a pressing issue to address.
He emphasized that family businesses need to reach a consensus on three future options: maintaining control, achieving co-governance, or considering market exit. Establishing family offices can serve as a cornerstone for sustainable family business operations, playing a stabilizing role in governance and succession.
